Created for the Modular Art Pods Exhibition, Fort Houston, Nashville, 2019.
The pod design is inspired by the biological concept of intercellular communication. It invites the viewer to consider the way cells communicate with each other for the greater good of the organism. As the human participant completes the simple task of walking through the tunnelled archways, they simulate cells communicating with each other to complete a task. The fabric panels serve as separate cells and the human participant is also a cell, moving, embracing and interacting with consecutive cells to accomplish the task of moving through the tunnel from the entrance to exit.
The structure itself forms a tunnel with an opposing entrance and exit, constructed of 8 archways or “cells”. The cell archways are constructed of translucent fabric representing cell membranes. Each archway features a slit in the fabric that acts as a doorway for participants. The fabric functions as a flexible boundary, or cell wall, that is fluid, malleable, and resilient. The fabric retains a measure of “play” or “give” so that even after being stretched open to allow passage, it returns to its original form, ready to be stretched again.
